The Landlord Works is a project of the Home Propositions team at Nationwide Building Society, designed to simplify landlord responsibilities and improve landlord management. The product includes the main website and the financial dashboard.
The landlord dashboard aimed to simplify property management. Key features include financial tracking, tenant management, maintenance request handling, and secure uploading and storage of important landlord documents.
I took ownership of the development for the tenant management, maintenance, and document storage features.
Successfully rebranded the product.
Established a design system to enhance project efficiency.
Created the end-to-end UI for the landlord dashboard, improving user experience.
User testing / Mixpanel Tracking / Fake Door testing / HotJar
Tools: Mixed Panel / HotJar
We used Mixpanel and Hotjar to better understand how visitors use our site. By tracking what users did on different pages with Mixpanel, we could see which features worked well and which didn't.
Design Process
Understand the problem > Think of solutions > Decide > Build a prototype > Test with users > Final Design
Understand the problem
I often helped run workshops with my team to come up with ideas together. We started by quickly looking at the problem areas. Then, we wrote "How Might We" statements. In the first part, we created a clear problem statement.
In the second half of the session, we brainstorm solutions together by creating rapid sketches.
We go over all of the sketches together and vote on the best one.
I used workshop and research findings to create a basic design for testing.
I made the final design after getting feedback from all our stakeholders.
Problem
Initially, a significant number of users registered for the product. However, a small proportion of these users proceeded to connect a bank account to the dashboard during onboarding .
Assumption
Landlords might be hesitant to adopt open banking, which involves the automatic integration of transaction data.
Validation
To evaluate this assumption, a fake door test was conducted. The dashboard initially featured "Automatic Tracking." For the purpose of testing, "Manual Tracking" and "Upload Spreadsheet" options were introduced. Users who selected these latter options were directed to a page explaining that their preferred solutions were currently under development. This approach allowed us to gather insights into landlords' preferred methods of tracking their financial data before committing to full development.
Result
Only 20% of users selected the "Automatic Tracking" option, while the remaining 80% indicated a preference for alternative tracking methods.
Conclusion
The data suggests that "Automatic Tracking" may not be the optimal solution for the majority of our users to manage their transactions.
